Texaco will have an open house Saturday at its former Lockport refinery to show progress on cleanup work.

The public is invited to the open house, which will feature 30- to 45-minute tours of the site at 301 W. 2nd St. The tours will be from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Camera and video equipment will not be allowed, and the company is inviting only adults to see the site, said company spokesman Gary Miller.

The plant, which was operational until 1981, contains about 250 tanks. In recent years, Texaco has been demolishing those tanks and removing other traces of the refinery operation, such as pipelines, Miller said.

The company also has been working to comply with cleanup guidelines for the 600-acre site issued by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency as well as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Miller said.

Company officials will discuss how they think the site can be used after the cleanup is finished in about three years, he added.
