The Geneva City Council has voted unanimously to approve an ordinance amending the municipal code requirements for massage clinics.

Under the new requirements, all massage therapy clinics must be licensed with the City of Geneva, and only people 18 or older who hold a license from an accredited school and with the City of Geneva may offer massage therapy.

The non-refundable filing fee is $100 for each business.

Therapists also must file applications for city licenses at a cost of $50 for the first year and $25 for each renewal, and the therapists also must provide passport photos. All applicants also must submit to fingerprints by the Geneva Police Department. The fingerprint fee is $25.

All massage therapists must provide proof of a current CPR certificate and must carry professional liability insurance.

Any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or an offense involving sexual misconduct will be denied, officials said.

Licensing will be for a one-year period, from May 1 through April 30.
