Some time ago the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was to advise whether drivers would be allowed to deactivate air bags.
I have a better idea: Outlaw air bags. The established facts support such action.
Fact: Air bags have killed at least 40 individuals.
Fact: Carmakers recognize the lethal effect of air bags. My car carries a warning notice that children 12 and under can be killed by the air bag.
Fact: The seat belt must be worn to make the air bag fully effective.
Fact: Seat belts alone can and do save lives. The recent tragedy in Paris, where the only survivor was the one who wore a seat belt, is evidence of that.
Question: Why credit air bags for saving lives when at best they need help to do the job and at worst become a lethal weapon?
I recommend that we ask our representatives in Congress to outlaw air bags.
