Robert E. Gillen, 61, a ceramic-tile setter and war veteran, died Thursday in Palatine. He was a resident of Westmont. Mr. Gillen, who was born and raised in Chicago, worked for more than 30 years for the Chicago Tile Trade in Chicago. Mr. Gillen was a member of the Ceramic Tile Layers Union Local No. 67. And he served in the U.S. Air Force in French Indochina. At that time, he was on the U.S. Air Force’s swim team, and he was a member of the U.S. Pan American swim team. Survivors include his wife, Deta; a son, William Gillen; three stepchildren, David Tooley, Joseph Gillen and Debra Gillen; a brother; two sisters; and six grandchildren. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the Westmont Funeral Chapels, 39 N. Cass Ave., Westmont. Services will be at noon Wednesday at the funeral home.
