The District 230 Board of Education voted this week to expand the Alternative Education program offered at Sandburg High School to Andrew High School in Tinley Park and Stagg High School in Palos Hills.
Sandburg has 56 students in the program.
The Alternative Education program is an after-school program offered to those students who cannot function in a normal high school setting due to truancy, pregnancy or other problems. Stagg began its program this week. Several teachers have already volunteered.
The Andrew program will begin in January, at the beginning of the second semester.
The cost of the program will be $269,434, including salaries, supplies and transportation costs for the three schools.
In the past, students had to provide their own transportation to Sandburg. This year, the district has allocated $27,234 for transportation costs.
The reason for the availability of transportation for students is to open the facilities to sophomores and upperclassmen who cannot drive. Currently, the program begins at 4 p.m. and ends at 7 p.m. With the addition of transportation, the times will be modified to 4:15 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The district expects to serve at lease 50 students at each location this year.
