In a new strategy, Muslim rebels shelled Algeria’s main garrison town for about three hours, killing 12 civilians and wounding 85, an Algerian newspaper said Sunday.
The rebels, who are entrenched in mountains overlooking Blida, where the military has its main headquarters and barracks 30 miles south of Algiers, bombarded the city with what was called homemade shells. Quoting a provisional hospital toll, El Watan newspaper said at least 12 civilians died and 85 were wounded in the shelling Friday night.
The army responded with artillery after locating the rebels’ position, El Watan said, adding that several houses and shops were damaged by the rebel shells.
