Seven states, including Illinois, filed lawsuits Wednesday seeking to stop sales of Herbal Ecstacy, billed as a safe alternative to the illegal drug Ecstasy.
The suits allege that Herbal Ecstacy, made by Global World Media Corp. of Venice Beach, Calif., is illegal because it hasn’t been approved as a drug by the Food and Drug Administration.
Global says that the product is a dietary supplement, not a drug.
Herbal Ecstacy contains ephedrine. The FDA has linked ephedrine-laced supplements to at least 17 deaths and 800 illnesses.
Arizona, California, Texas, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin also sued.
