Nun, playwright, philosopher, mathematician and poet, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz (1651-1695) infuriated the male powers that be when she had the nerve to debate religious doctrine. In colonial times, her bravado made her unpopular with authority figures, but today, she is considered one of Mexico’s greatest writers.
To commemorate her formidable spirit and intellect, the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum is holding its fourth annual Sor Juana Festival, which celebrates the accomplishments of Mexican women and other women of color.
The event starts Friday and continues until Nov. 23; it will feature a variety of performances and art exhibits. Call 312-738-1503 for tickets and schedules.
