If silly, juvenile, obnoxious comedy is your thing… do we have a guy for you.
The TV character Mr. Bean, a blundering lout of a guy, has been splitting British sides for years. And a movie starring him, conveniently called “Bean” (PG-13), opened Friday. (You may have seen the silly “Bean minutes” trailers at summer movies or at commercial breaks on TV.)
Mr. Bean is a goofy guy with an elastic face who stumbles and bumbles his way in and out of silly jams. (Basically he manages to turn a simple task, like making a snack, into the most impossible, doomed situation you can imagine.) He rarely talks, but his slapstick, physical comedy totally gets the point across. Movie-company execs are hoping he tickles your funny bone the way, say, a guy named Carrey has.
“We felt that his physicality and the expressions – the silliness, the `Dumb and Dumber’ qualities – all seemed to be in vogue,” Russell Schwartz, president of Gramercy Pictures, told Tribune staff writer Gary Dretzka. “We hoped kids would embrace Mr. Bean because he made them laugh and teens because he was breaking the rules.”
