A Bensenville company has been selected to demolish two apartment buildings in a neighborhood-renewal project.

The two four-flat buildings at 539 and 548 Green Oaks Court could be leveled in about a month, said John Berley, assistant village manager.

“Everybody agrees that they’re an eyesore and that something has to be done to improve the neighborhood,” he said.

Before demolition could begin, the village must hear from U.S. District Judge Ruben Castillo, who is reviewing the terms of a settlement in a lawsuit that challenged the village’s redevelopment plan.

A coalition of residents and housing advocates sued the village in 1994, contending the redevelopment plan was designed to cut the number of Hispanic renters in Addison.

A settlement was reached in August that includes the village paying $1.8 million to 170 families affected by the plan.
