Kids are getting warnings about the dangers of cigarettes from everywhere – home, school, the media, their buds… So a recent finding seems kind of ironic. KidNews has learned that candy cigarettes rank first and second in novelty candy sales. Topping the list were those chalky, white peppermint cigarettes, followed by bubble gum cigarettes.

“This just blew me away,” said Barry Bernstein. He’s the sales manager for Bulk Food Distributors, a Michigan supply company that sells candy across the country.

“I don’t have a handle on why,” he said. “All I can tell you is that candy cigarettes are moving for us and it just doesn’t seem to quit.”

Bernstein did say there’s no breakdown on whether it’s kids buying the candy or adults. (It could be adults buying the stuff because it reminds them of the candy of their childhood.)

Back in the pack were all other novelty candies, including Gummy Rolex watches, Pop Rocks, Push Pops and Bubbletape. (Bin candy sold by weight, like Skittles fits in a separate category.)
