In Cornelia Grumman’s well-done report on recent double executions (Perspective, Nov. 23), she quoted a prosecutor as saying the spectacle was “like some kind of morality play where it’s good versus evil and, on this stage, good wins.”
I would argue that, no, evil wins again.
When I covered an electrocution years ago as a reporter for the Chicago Daily News, I concluded that executing a human being in cold blood is evil in itself.
The evil is all the greater because it’s done in the name of the people.
I say this not out of sympathy for the person executed, who very likely committed some terrible crime, but out of concern for the future of a society that can confuse a barbaric lust for vengeance with justice.
