“The Tony Danza Show”: Pulled from the schedule for November sweeps, the 372nd sitcom starring pocket palooka Tony Danza returns Wednesday (7:30 p.m., WMAQ-Ch. 5), needing to draw some viewership numbers to survive. Tonight’s episode sees sportswriter and single dad Tony DiMeo (Danza) out on the town with his father (Dean Stockwell), trying to reinject romance into his life. Do Tony, NBC and yourselves a favor: Don’t watch this exercise in dull averageness, like its star so eager to be liked that it practically rolls over and presents its underbelly. If this gets cancelled, maybe next time–and there will be a next time–Danza will go for something other than the tried and true. Like maybe he won’t be named Tony, won’t be a single dad and won’t even play it so cuddly all the time.
