ABC newswoman and syndicated columnist Cokie Roberts thinks Vice President Al Gore made a big mistake in praising Ellen DeGeneres in a recent speech to a group of Hollywood movers and shakers.

“I thought it was dumb,” Roberts said of Gore’s remarks. “What got the Democrats in trouble for many, many years was the appearance that they were pandering to special interests. Clinton and Gore got away from that, and moved more toward the mainstream. (Gore’s speech) looked just like, well, `I’m in California now, who do I need to play to to win the primary.’ “

If Gore wanted to endorse a show, Roberts think he should have chosen CBS’ “Touched by an Angel.” She and her husband, newsman Steven Roberts, just co-authored a column in praise of that heavenly drama.

“It’s very positive, with a good image of family life and dealing with sorrow and distress . . . it’s just as in with the Hollywood set.”
