Louis Bernat, 83, died Tuesday in Northwestern Memorial Hospital. A longtime Chicago resident, Mr. Bernat was a Chicago patent attorney and a member of the Chicago Board of Trade. He was born in Liverpool, England, and grew up in Hammond, where he worked in the steel mills. A 1938 graduate of the University of Chicago, Mr. Bernat received his law degree from DePaul University in 1945 and was a physicist on the Manhattan Project during World War II. He also had traded commodities since 1969. Most recently, he served as an adjunct professor at Northwestern University. “He was enthusiastic about life and had a wide array of interests, from sports to Oriental art to collecting classic race cars,” said his son, Robert. “We miss him very much already.” Other survivors include his wife, Dessa, and a brother. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Weinstein Family Services, 111 Skokie Blvd., Wilmette.
