Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

When the Art Ensemble of Chicago first locked horns (and bass and percussion), no one thought that this boldly avant-garde group would turn out to be history’s second-longest-lived jazz combo (right behind the Modern Jazz Quartet). But it has now been 28 years since saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell, trumpeter Lester Bowie, bassist Malachai Favors Maghostu and drummer Famoudou Don Moye joined forces under the Art Ensemble banner. “Ancient to the Future” is a phrase the band has marched behind, and that slogan should fit the music the group will play Monday at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Traffic series at Steppenwolf Theatre, 1650 N. Halsted St. Call 312-335-1650.
