The article “Survey stirs furor over syndrome” (WomaNews, Nov. 30) overstates the results of Bernice Andrews’ survey of psychotherapists whose patients recovered “lost” memories. Because of serious methodological problems, one must be careful in interpreting the results. For example, the author did not independently examine tape recordings or written records but instead relied on self-reporting of therapists.

False-memory societies have asked for scientific evidence regarding claims that people can be unaware of years and years of brutalization. Bernice Andrews’ study provides no evidence.
