In your Dec. 4 edition you ran two police-related stories. Both involved suspected drug users.

You gave front-page coverage to the Jeremiah Mearday court case and the demonstrations it has generated. The story about Police Officer Richard D. Schott was relegated to the MetroChicago section. The police officer is dead because his assailant, arrested for possession of controlled substances, chose to fight with him while being placed in a holding cell.

Your article indicated that Officer Schott served the community for 25 years and had an exemplary record of self-sacrifice and bravery. The suspect, Sergio DeLeon, was on parole for another drug-related offense.

I do not understand how a court case involving the emotional police brutality issue can be given priority coverage over the murder of a dedicated police officer.

This reminds me of your coverage a few years ago of the Hike for Life, an event attended by several thousand people but buried in a tiny two-inch column. Thirty pro-choice/anti-life protesters were given front-page coverage in the same edition.

Both examples of coverage that I cite give insight into how some of your editors view the importance of life versus the prevailing winds in our political maelstrom.
