Bet you don’t let your next team give you jersey number 13.

THE WEEK THAT WAS

To quote the great Crash Davis, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose and sometimes it rains. Here’s a quick look in the rearview mirror at an up, down and occasionally stormy week in sports:

Winners of the week

* Jimmy Collins. His UIC Flames send message with convincing home victory over Illinois State.

* Mike Gartner. Coyotes winger quietly becomes only fifth NHL player to score 700 goals. If you can name the other four, seek professional help immediately.

* Jerry Stackhouse. Trade to Pistons gives him a chance to prove why he was drafted No. 3 overall three years ago.

* The WNBA. Women’s league gets great exposure now that NBA has dropped All-Star weekend slam-dunk contest in favor of mixed doubles shootout.

* Dave Wannstedt. Gets assurance that he’ll be back as Bears coach next season.

Losers of the week

* Bears fans. See Wannstedt item above.

* Anthony Marshall. Bears safety misses team breakfast and gets cut. Mom always said breakfast was the most important meal of the day.

* The Blackhawks. Blowing more late leads than Mel Rojas.

* Dan Cleary. Hawks’ No. 1 pick can’t make Canada’s junior world championships team; seems well on his way to becoming the next Everett Sanipass.

* Florida Marlins. Kevin Brown joins list of off-season departures that already includes Moises Alou, Jeff Conine, Robb Nen and Devon White.

TALKING TRASH

The week’s most disposable quote comes from Los Angeles Lakers GM Jerry West, speaking to agent Arn Tellem, who represents suspended Warriors guard Latrell Sprewell:

“This will all blow over, just like a double murder.”
