A Skokie police officer was in fair condition Thursday evening at Evanston Hospital after his squad car struck a steel pole while en route to a call.

Police would not identify the patrol officer, who was traveling northbound in the 9300 block of Skokie Boulevard about 3:20 p.m. Thursday when his squad car spun out after hitting a patch of ice. It crashed into a sign pole at the Goodyear service center at 9323 Skokie Blvd., according to a news release from Skokie police.

The officer was trapped in the car for nearly an hour before being transported to the hospital with leg injuries.

The officer was responding to a battery call at Old Orchard Theatres, 9400 Skokie Blvd.
