Roselle Park District officials got a welcome Christmas present this week when they learned that a $200,000 Illinois Department of Natural Resources grant was coming their way.

Park Director Diane McCray said she learned of the grant’s approval through a press release.

“Our consultant, Laura Ross, told us that the newspapers might get the information before we did via a letter or phone call, but I’m thrilled either way,” McCray said.

The money will be used for an expansion project near the Clauss Recreation Center that will include new baseball fields, a basketball court, a soccer field and a shelter with bathroom facilities.

The estimated cost is around $566,000. Last month, the board approved the sale of bonds to finance the balance not covered by the grant.

McCray said the project would have been scaled back if the grant had not been approved.
