The DuPage 7 case is heating up as the tentative trial date nears. Unfortunately, most observers are just tired of it. They would like for it to go away. Many would like to see the law officers charged in the case get let off the hook. Perhaps people say, “They’ve probably learned their lesson.” Or perhaps, “It will save a lot of tax dollars, time and effort if the case against them is dropped and we can all go home.”
But why should law-enforcement officers ever have an excuse or incentive to be above the law? If we allow the DuPage 7 to get away with railroading an innocent man onto death row–if that is, in fact, what they did–then we become co-conspirators.
Of all the weak defenses I’ve read coming from supporters of the DuPage 7, one of the lamest must be about “the awful burden we are suffering to defend our loved ones.” Perhaps Rolando Cruz’s mother can relate.
