I always enjoy the end of the year top movie lists. There are always a few surprises, some good and some that leave me wondering if we all saw the same movie.

What I cannot understand is the good showing here and nationwide for “L.A. Confidential.” I thought it was very good to a point, then it committed the fatal flaw of being untrue to its own internal logic.

One of the detectives does something that is completely out of character–a 180 from what we have learned about him in every way–and that, and the following confrontation with another detective, sets up the ending of the film.

To me, to have to depend on such a crucial flip-flop is not the sign of good moviemaking, but rather very sloppy moviemaking.
