The appointment of the first Hispanic to a West Chicago aldermanic seat has been postponed again.

Diane Bustamante-Griffin said that she will not be able to accept the position because of personal conflicts. Mayor Steve Lakics received a letter from Bustamante-Griffin during the holidays.

Aldermen were scheduled to vote at Monday’s meeting.

“It’s very disappointing,” Lakics said. “I thought she was a great candidate. The aldermen thought she was a good candidate.”

Aldermen postponed the vote at the Dec. 15 meeting, saying they needed more time to review Bustamante-Griffin’s qualifications.

Lakics nominated her for her education, political position and Spanish fluency. The city of 16,000 has 35 percent Hispanic residents.

Bustamante-Griffin, 42, has lived in West Chicago for two years. She has a degree in management from the University of Texas in El Paso.
