Janan Hanna’s article “Children’s side turns divorce into 3-way split” (Page 1, Dec. 28) was right on target regarding lawyers and the conflicts of divorce.

When there is a confrontational divorce and the courts get involved with the children’s issues, it becomes very expensive. My experience with the children’s court-appointed attorney is that these attorneys are not qualified, do very little and charge an exorbitant fee. They are not knowledgeable about the children or the parent situation, but they have power over fee charges and the lives of the people involved. There are professionals who are qualified in this field and can help in the decision process.

The children’s attorney supposedly is there to protect the children and meet with the children on a regular basis. They are to return phone calls if there are difficulties with the children and the parents. This was not my experience. The attorney showed no interest except to collect her fee. These attorneys are appointed by the court and not accountable to anyone.

As Ms. Hanna stated, we are overdue, big time, for changes in our legal system when it comes to divorce.
