The rest of the basketball teams in the Mid-Suburban League’s South Division aren’t the only ones surprised by Rolling Meadows’ 4-0 record.
“I didn’t think it would happen,” said Rolling Meadows coach Dave Brown. “It feels good to be two games ahead of the pack.”
After being held to six points in the first three quarters, junior Rob Garnes scored 10 fourth-quarter points to finish with 18 and Glenn Paddock added 15 points as the visiting Mustangs knocked off No. 14 Hoffman Estates 60-48 Thursday night.
Rolling Meadows (10-5) trailed by as many as seven in the first half before using second-quarter runs of 10-0 and 7-2 to build a 27-20 halftime lead.
“It doesn’t bother Rob who scores,” Brown said. “He would like to shoot more than he does, but he’s a totally unselfish player.”
Chris Sigl and Jeff Schilling each had 13 points for Hoffman Estates (14-2, 2-2).
Young 65, Lincoln Park 48: Cordell Henry and Quentin Richardson each scored 19 points for No. 1 Young (12-0, 4-0) in its Public Red West victory.
Farragut 66, Orr 48: No. 4 Farragut (10-3, 3-0) outscored Orr 12-2 in the second quarter en route to the Public Red West victory. Michael Wright led the Admirals with 32 points. Tyshaun Henry scored 15 for Orr.
Westinghouse 85, Manley 67: Terrance Williams scored 22 of his 32 points in the first half for No. 17 Westinghouse (11-4, 2-1), which led 44-22 at intermission in the Public Red West game. Antuan Hill, Dwight Woods and Earl Brown scored 13 apiece for Manley.
Elk Grove 52, Conant 36: The Grenadiers (10-5, 2-2) won their sixth straight behind Mark Hedman (15 points), Aaron Barthel (14) and Justin Penio (13). Russ Michna and Brian Costin scored 10 apiece for Conant (11-6, 1-3 Mid-Suburban South).
University High 51, North Shore Country Day 49: Karega Bennett had 11 points and Justin Slaughter and Johannes Beeby added 10 apiece to lead U-High (11-6, 4-1) in the Independent School League.
Washington 62, Hirsch 38: Montele Hogan scored 24 points and Jason Washington added 14 for Washington (13-3, 4-0) in the Public Blue South. Hirsch fell to 6-10, 3-1.
Girls basketball
Waubonsie Valley 61, St. Charles 38: To help Leslie Davenport, who broke her nose in a victory over Streamwood on Saturday, feel more comfortable in her face mask, Waubonsie’s athletic trainers made masks of athletic tape for fans to wear. The plan worked as Davenport collected 22 points and 16 rebounds. Ashley Luke added 20 for the 20th-ranked Warriors (15-4, 8-0). St. Charles dropped to 7-11, 3-3.
Wheaton-Warrenville South 55, Glenbard North 44: The 11th-ranked Tigers (17-2, 5-1) won in the DuPage Valley behind Ali Klaas’ 17 points.
Lake Forest 46, Stevenson 41: Janie Hodgkinson scored 10 of her 25 points in the fourth quarter to lift No. 18 Lake Forest (15-3, 6-0) to the North Suburban victory over Stevenson (8-9, 4-2).
Andrew 61, Joliet 54: Kim Nowak (21 points) hit three late free throws to seal the SICA West victory for Andrew (8-8, 3-3), which converted 12 of 15 from the line in the final period. Brandi Teamer scored 18 for Joliet (12-9, 2-2).
Argo 61, Bolingbrook 42: Natalie McClure and Aja Mister scored 14 apiece for Argo (15-6, 3-2) in the SICA North.
Cary-Grove 57, McHenry 55 (OT): Liz Malmen (12 points) sank four free throws in overtime to help Cary-Grove (15-3, 9-2) prevail in the Fox Valley. Kristen Kedzior led the victors with 17 points. McHenry fell to 9-9, 5-5.
Libertyville 66, Antioch 35: Tricia Thomas scored 17 to lead Libertyville (10-7, 5-1 North Suburban).
Rich South 50, Bradley-Bourbonnais 48: Jasmine Daniels (19 points) iced the SICA South victory for Rich South (14-4, 5-0) with a basket in the closing seconds.
St. Francis de Sales 58, Holy Trinity 47: Roberta Hooper’s 27 points paced De Sales (10-8, 3-0) in the GCAC Blue.
Seton 60, St. Benedict 51: LaKisha Hoffman’s 20 points and Rene Shalvis’ 19 led Seton (11-5, 6-0) in the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference’s White Division. Maureen Weber’s 20 led St. Benedict.
Taft 53, Lincoln Park 17: Chasity Rutledge and Latasha White each scored 16 points and White added 18 rebounds for Taft (12-5, 5-1 Public Red North.
