More than 50 residents have joined a community task force to help a drive by village officials for a high school in town.

Trustee Larry Giampa will be appointed task force chairman at Thursday’s trustees’ meeting at Village Hall, officials said.

“He was the first one to volunteer,” Village President Ben Fajardo said. “He also has a son at Glenbard North and is also familiar with youth activities in the community.”

The panel is expected to gather quickly to plot strategies on getting community approval for an advisory referendum on a community high school. The panel, at the same time, will see how to best defeat the Glenbard school district measure to sell $16 million in bonds to renovate and expand their four campuses. Both measures are on the March 17 ballot, but only Glendale Heights will be voting on the high school measure.

Glendale Heights students attend the district’s four high schools: Glenbard East in Lombard, West and South in Glen Ellyn and North in Carol Stream. In addition to long rides their children take to school, residents cite this division along with the prestige and unity a community high school brings as reasons for their own high school.

Fajardo said residents and trustees would likely start attending Glenbard meetings to persuade board members to use funds from bond proceeds to construct a fifth high school.
