Starting on what could be a two-year trek, the Gurnee Plan Commission and Zoning Board met in a joint session Wednesday night to discuss priorities for a review of the village’s 300-page zoning ordinance.

The ordinance was passed in 1980, only four years after the opening of Six Flags-Great America.

Among the issues addressed was a first draft of a proposed ordinance to control outdoor lighting. Next, officials will review the village’s four areas targeted for special development, including the corridor along Interstate Highway 94, a central area around the village hall and two areas along Grand Avenue.

“The ordinance has served us well since 1980, but it’s time to take a hard look at it and see if we need to tinker,” said Jon Wildenberg, assistant village administrator and director of building and zoning.

Recommendations made by the Zoning Board and Plan Commission are subject to approval by the Village Board, Wildenberg said.
