Out-of-state garbage truck drivers came to the Milwaukee area Wednesday to fill in for striking Teamsters.
About 150 Teamster union members walked off the job Tuesday, affecting pickups in communities in Milwaukee-area counties and delaying commercial pickup service for businesses as far west as Madison and Portage.
Garbage went uncollected Tuesday at suburban homes and businesses.
BFI Waste Systems of North American Inc., based in Houston, sent about 100 replacement drivers from neighboring states, company spokesman John Swartzbaugh said.
The drivers made commercial and residential trash pickups Wednesday, he said, adding that pickups for residential neighborhoods were running about a day behind.
Sebastian Busalacchi, president of Teamsters Local 200, accused BFI of trying to break the union. A letter Jan. 15 from the company told employees they can resign from the union, he said.
A three-year contract expired Dec. 31. Union members rejected a company three-year offer 98-3 earlier this month, Busalacchi said.
