There’s no need to run for cover. The camisole, the barest of basics, is a more user-friendly version of the lingerie styles that have been with us for countless seasons.

It’s less aggressive than a bustier, more feminine than a tank and offers more coverage than a bra top. It can neatly solve many a dilemma involving sheer fabrics. And it’s certainly more flattering than the tube, one of the season’s other popular runway silhouettes.

Designers went strap happy for spring, showing camisoles for day and evening, in knits, cotton, suede, chiffon and lace. They’re the ideal canvas for the feminine flourishes of the season, from delicate beading and embroidery to floral prints. Some are cut straight across the bodice, while others dip into a V or form a cross-your-heart style. The trendiest versions drape into a soft cowl in front or feature a touch of shirring at the side.

And while camisoles often stood solo on the runways, that doesn’t always turn out to be the most flattering option. “I think of a camisole as a starting point,” says fashion trend forecaster David Wolfe, creative director for the Doneger Group, in New York. “I think you need more than a camisole to create an outfit.”

So try layering one under a buttoned-up jacket at the office. Or investing in an updated cardigan and camisole twinset. Or tucking a camisole under a lacy, openwork sweater. For off-hours dressing, pair a delicate, beaded chiffon camisole with menswear trousers or a side-slit skirt.

Just think, when the temperature starts to climb, you’ll be armed with your own form of air-conditioning.
