`Harry and I have known each other for half a century. We’ve been contemporaries, competitors, colleagues and, most of all, friends. We socialized a lot.
“I remember when he was hit by a car during the off-season in 1968, and hospitalized with all kinds of broken bones, including both legs broken.
“This is how tough he was, how he could battle back. It’s spring training, only a few months after the accident, and I’m in the clubhouse for a Cubs-Cardinals game when Harry walks in. He was using a cane. But I was amazed he was back walking so soon.
“Then, the following year, I was playing tennis with him and he ran my legs off.
“If I had a brother and lost him, I think I would feel the same as I do now.”
