Hewlett-Packard Co. will release its own version of Sun Microsystems Inc.’s Java software, putting its stamp on the fledgling technology that aims to let programs run on any operating system.
The top computer-maker behind International Business Machines Corp. said Microsoft Corp. will be the first licensee of the new software tools and specifications. Included in H-P’s plans is a so-called virtual machine, software that translates Java programs.
