The board of West Northfield School District 31 voted 6-1 to add two modular (mobile) classrooms at the district’s elementary school.

The board views the additional classrooms as a temporary solution to overcrowding at its two schools and is still pursuing a November referendum to ask voters to pay for additional permanent facilities.

“We anticipate growth of about 150 students over the next three years,” said board member Phillip Immergluck.

“We need these modulars. Even if we pass the referendum (proposal), it (the new facilities) doesn’t come on line until 2000 at the earliest,” said board member Michael Karoff.

Pitsa Madoch, the lone dissenter Thursday , said money could be better spent working toward a more permanent solution.
