President Clinton now claims that he was not “aware” of the extent of the genocide that took place in dir2
nda/Burundi a few years ago.
This strikes a note of humanitarian hypocrisy as the magnitude of the atrocities was well documented at the time. A more honest response would be that Rwanda/Burundi was of little political importance to the United States and the fate of millions of poor African peasants was not high on the list of “politically correct” causes in which the president chose to involve himself. While it may now be “politically correct” to place the blame for these deaths on the “pure evil” lurking in human nature, it is also true that “they were expendable”–at least as far as our government was concerned.
