The achievements of the great African-American actor, singer and peace advocate Paul Robeson have been neglected since he died in 1976, mostly because of his socialist political views. A monthlong series of events in honor of the 100th anniversary of Robeson’s birth are an effort to resurrect memories of this man, who risked his career to stand up for human rights. At the Harold Washington Library Center, 400 S. State St. (312-747-4875), a film festival will be held at 5 p.m. Thursdays through April 30. Other events around town include a performance by the Hyde Park Youth Symphony and Chicago Children’s Choir at 3 p.m. Saturday at the South Shore Cultural Center, 7059 South Shore Drive (312-747-2536); a birthday celebration at the same place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, where featured guests will include Vernon Jarrett and Studs Terkel; and “Paul Robeson,” a play starring “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” star Avery Brooks, which premieres at 8 p.m. April 18 at the New Regal Theater, 1645 E. 79th St. (773-721-9230). Call Columbia College at 312-344-7114 for more information on Robeson events.
