Ameritech gains: Ameritech Corp. said first-quarter profit rose 10 percent on demand for more phone lines and enhanced services. Profit before charges rose to $590 million, or 53 cents a diluted share, from $536 million or 48 cents a year earlier. That matched the average estimate of analysts surveyed by IBES International Inc. Ameritech’s customers are ordering more phone lines for Internet hookups and other data services as well as high-margin enhanced services. The Chicago-based local phone company said investments in wireless services and European phone businesses are also starting to pay off.
