About 50 homeowners and their children told Addison officials Monday night that they strongly oppose a proposal that Harvard Avenue be opened between North and Armitage Avenues.
Mayor Larry Hartwig was quick to respond.
“The answer is clearly no,” said Hartwig. “We are not interested in opening that street.”
The suggestion to open the street came from neighboring Villa Park. The north-south street is barricaded at North Park Mall, and a portion of the road serves as a dividing line between the villages.
The street was barricaded decades ago to protect homeowners from commercial traffic.
“I have a dog, and there are children all over the neighborhood who use the street to play and ride their bikes,” said Ed Wolter, a 31-year-old shipping clerk who lives in the 900 block of Harvard Avenue.
