Liquid Soul: Make Some Noise (Ark 21)

Whereas most “acid-jazz” outfits play it nice and easy, Chicago’s Liquid Soul prefers it nice and rough, thanks to saxophonist Mars Williams and a high-stepping horn section. At their Sunday night shows at Double Door, Williams and company shift from funk to soul to free jazz, throwing in dollops of salsa and hip-hop as they go, and “Make Some Noise” tries to tap into that genre-leaping flow with a mix of live and studio tracks, including an audacious take on “Salt Peanuts” with a scatting Kurt Elling. It’s no substitute for the live show, but “Make Some Noise” comes closer to capturing the group’s brand of dance fever than did its 1995 self-released debut.
