Take Our Daughters to Work day, when (parents) take their daughters, but not their sons, to work, isn’t fair to the boys. I think it is gender discrimination. The girls in my class say some parents don’t work, and some don’t, but what about the parents who do work? Shouldn’t they take their kids to work?

Rebel, rebel

In response to the article about rebellion (April 28 Oh Yeah?): While you got down the points and causes of rebellion, the examples you used weren’t very good.

If you see something on MTV, there’s a huge chance it’s not rebellious. MTV is a network owned by a huge multi-billion-dollar company that is using it to make more money, not to rebel. Courtney Love isn’t rebellious; Rage Against the Machine isn’t rebellious. They’re sellouts.

Rebellion doesn’t always mean (rebellion) against authority. For me, rebellion is a fight against this highly inefficient, brainwashed society we live in. Our society is definitely one that I’m ashamed to live in, where face value is rewarded and actual thought is vanquished; where hate and money are the fuel that eat unity and sensibility. If people turned away from society for one day, there would be no need for them to go back, because if you leave all the rules behind, what’s holding you back?

Walk of life

I’m responding to your article on walking (April 21 Sports). I agree with Laurie Tif and Richard Cotton that walking is good exercise. When kids hear from their parents that they need to walk to school, they don’t want to. They really don’t know what they’re missing. I jump at the chance. I hear the wonderful sounds of nature and see the beautiful sights. It’s a chance to get fresh air before school. When I’m walking I really don’t think I’m exercising, I just enjoy the walk. If kids don’t like walking in the outdoors, they should just go to a mall and look at different stores. That way they’re exercising and enjoying it!

Remember the Holocaust

I’m writing in response to the article about the Anne Frank Web site (April 21 Playing Around). That is a very good site. Kids really need to be educated about that devastating and tragic time. Anne Frank was one of many Jews who were courageous fighters. Six million Jews were killed by the Nazis, and the ones who survived were lucky.

Usually the world learns from mistakes in history, but unfortunately for mankind, there are still people out there who stick to their stereotypical beliefs. We can only hope that one day we will learn to accept one another.

Wasted time

Where has my life gone? Well, I wish I knew that myself. Sometimes I wonder if it was just that I wasn’t meant to succeed in life. I wish I knew, though, because now I wish to change my life for the good. I want to succeed in life. I want to have many friends. I want to get along with others. I want to have the best education and the best job. I want to marry and have kids someday, but that day is far away from today.

Today is not my day as it is not yours. For I am not to succeed until the day I change my ways, the way I treat others, the way I feel and the way I am. For I am the one you want not to be by, and I am the one whom you want not to be friends with. I am who I am and I’m not the kind of person who cares about anyone or anything but myself.

Until today. Today is the day I change. Today is the day I see more clearly who you are and what I am.

Animal planet

I am shocked at the number of animals that are endangered (April 21 Cover). Some of the animals listed were surprising. Especially the number of ocelots left. It’s terrible how these animals must suffer endangerment, but even worse that we are a reason for it.

There is still hope for these animals. Look at the black-footed ferret. It’s great that the number jumped from 18 to 500. What we don’t think about is that if we kill off an entire species, other animals may die or multiply unexpectedly.

Stacey B., 12 Chicago Ridge

I believe people in the past, like the Romans, who made animals fight each other, really mistreated animals. But I still think people in our century are using animals for unreasonable purposes, such as sports, or killing animals, especially endangered species, for money. Some people will kill animals when they attack them. Come on! It’s our problem if we get hurt because we’re taking over its land. That doesn’t mean we have to kill them.

MJ no saint

Dane H. and Kyle M. (April 28 Backtalk) obviously know nothing about Michael Jordan. First of all, he DID get a technical on the spot for the cheap shot. And Jordan is not a “clean” basketball player; in fact, he was named one of the three biggest jerks in the NBA by players (check out the NBA preview issue). And yes, he WAS ranked higher than even Rodman.

J. H., 13 Naperville

Editor’s note: We tried to verify the Jordan jerk rating, but couldn’t find it. Could you give us the scoop on where this showed up, J.H. or any other reader?

In response to Dane H. and Kyle M., you think it is OK not to give Michael Jordan a technical foul even though what he did was wrong. Maybe Michael is a “clean player.” That doesn’t mean if he breaks the rules of the game he shouldn’t get in trouble for it. Now think about it: Mike does something wrong, but since he is a good player, he doesn’t deserve the technical foul. Does it make sense? NO. He breaks the rules, and since he is a good player, the refs have to break rules also? Come on! Give me a break!!

Names in the game

I think that Michael McGehee is right that new sports video games come out every year (April 14 Playing Around). But the games still have fake moves and they should have name players. It’s cool that you can slam dunk and see it from a better angle. Controlling the passing and dunking, though, has been around longer so it’s more like it’s one old basketball game, just more advanced.

There are other games with realistic action and 3D worlds combined.
