A National Labor Relations Board administrative law judge ordered U.S. Can Corp. to pay almost $1.5 million in back pay to 29 former employees. The back-pay award will be increased by an amount of interest yet to be determined, the United Steelworkers of America said. The union said the employees were unlawfully denied transfer opportunities and vacation pay when the Oak Brook-based company refused to permit them to transfer from closed plants in Chicago and Passaic, N.J., to other facilities in New Hampshire.
