Nedra Roberts (“Alarming searches,” Voice, May 10) objects to student searches because they “inflict emotional scars” on students and because weapons are only “rarely” found. She says that “adults would not have been subjected to a search of this extent unless arrested.”
Ms. Roberts, where have you been? This is a different world and a different country, with different people than in the ’50s and ’60s. Adults are willingly, extensively searched every day at our airports in response to terrorists, hijackers and just plain nuts.
In Memphis last week, a 5-year-old took a gun to school to kill his kindergarten teacher because she gave him a time-out! Students are routinely gunned down by other students! In light of the rash of such shootings, the board’s actions are measured and intelligent. I’ll bet they have saved more than one life.
I say thank God for the vigilant Bureau of Safety and Security!
