Confusion over state regulations prompted the Wonder Lake Village Board on Wednesday night to delay a vote on using motor-fuel tax funds for its 1998 road program.

As now proposed, the one-year road renovation program would commit the village to spending $168,000 in motor fuel tax funds it would receive over the next 7 years.

Another option would be to ask voters to approve a bond issue in a referendum. However, officials said the board doesn’t want to take that route because it would automatically delay the road program another year.

Village President Kate Topf proposed that the board consider spreading the six-mile, $300,000 resurfacing project over 3 years, completing two miles a year. This option, she said, would sidestep Illinois Department of Transportation regulations pertaining to road construction projects.

Village officials said they were uncertain how those regulations pertain to their plans.

The matter was referred to village attorney Rich Curran, who is to review the question and report back to the board June 3.
