Steve Chapman can’t seem to figure out why HMOs are a four-letter word (Op-Ed, May 21). Here’s some help:

– Their incompetent and cumbersome bureaucracies are enough to make the worst government bureaucrat run away screaming.

– Their restrictions force us to see incompetent, uncaring practitioners.

– Their policies force practitioners who are competent and do care to hurry patients through at a pace incompatible with quality care.

– Their main interest is in cutting costs to fund the obscene salaries and profits of top executives and stockholders.

That’s just for starters.
