In her piece on the smoking ban in Wilmette (Metro, May 28), I believe LeAnn Spencer was in error when she wrote that secondhand smoke causes 3,000 lung cancer deaths among non-smokers and 37,000 heart disease deaths in the Chicago area. That actually is the statistical estimate for the whole country. But for most people, inhaling second-hand smoke is about as risky as inhaling exhaust fumes on the Eisenhower Expressway over the same number of years.
While any increase at all is not to be taken lightly, the numbers in this story were completely out of line.
