In April we told you about KidNews’ new tadpole pets. We named ’em Brian and Dennis Wilson in honor of the Beach Boys, cuz we had a little covered beach habitat to put them in once they morphed into frogs. Brian, who showed zero inclination to leave tadpole status, went belly up. But Dennis sprouted legs, arms, warts and bulging eyes in an awesome metamorphic display. He graduated from Surf School to the frog habitat.
There, we fed him live crickets. It was inspiring to see this food chain in action: pounce, gulp and only a cricket leg or two remained to remind us of what once was.
But then something seemed to go wrong. Dennis started hanging out under the surfboard in his pond. He no longer lounged under his palm tree. We wondered and worried: Was Dennis bored or tired of a straight-cricket diet? Was he longing for a lily pad to call his own?
