Burnside Construction Co. has asked Wheeling Village Board members to expedite its request to annex more than 17 acres at Milwaukee Avenue and Hintz Road.

Downers Grove-based Burnside Construction plans to build 165 manor homes and townhouses. The manor homes would range in price from $120,000 to $140,000 and the townhouses from $150,000 to $170,000.

Burnside officials told the Village Board, meeting as a committee of the whole recently, that the company plans to build the development regardless of whether the village annexes the property, now in unincorporated Cook County.

Bob Kenney, a lawyer for Burnside, said that among other benefits to the village, annexation would give Wheeling control over the property and would loop the water system between Hintz Road and Milwaukee Avenue.

However, Village Board member William Spangeberg, saying he had heard of the proposal only recently, asked Kenney, “What are you looking for, to jump ahead of the line?”

Kenney replied that Burnside had been unsuccessful in petitioning the village for the hearing for the last 1 1/2 years.

Trustee Judy Abruscato said, “I would like to have control of the property and would like to work with you on the property. But in view of (Spangeberg’s) concerns, I would like to see a report from Burnside so we could see the pluses and minuses before we go ahead with this.”
