Lockheed Martin Missiles and Space said it will cut 2,000 to 2,500 jobs by the end of the year, primarily at its San Francisco Bay area operation.
The manufacturer of space and defense systems said it expects 1,000 to 1,500 of the cuts to be involuntary layoffs and the rest to come through attrition and offers of early retirement.
Lockheed Martin Missiles, a unit of defense and aerospace giant Lockheed Martin Corp., blamed the layoffs on a recent loss of business contracts and a delay in major orders. Parent Lockheed Martin, of Bethesda, Md., had 1997 sales of $28.06 billion.
