Muslim rebels killed 14 people overnight and wounded two by slashing their throats, Algerian security forces said Saturday.

The massacre southwest of Algiers raised to more than 240 the number of Algerians killed in a new wave of bloodshed in night raids, bombings, rebel ambushes and military operations against guerrilla strongholds in recent weeks, according to security forces and newspaper reports.

More than 65,000 people have been killed since 1992, when authorities canceled a general election which militant Islamists were poised to win.
