Long-awaited road improvements will be made at the intersection of Illinois Highway 176 and Terra Cotta Road beginning Thursday.

There has been a history of complaints about the intersection in the past two years, said Assistant City Engineer Bill Geegan.

To avoid traffic snarls during the project, the city will not institute lane closures or detours for commuters.

“We are attempting to build it under full traffic,” Geegan said.

The $550,000 project will include widening Illinois 176 to include left-turn lanes, adding left-turn lanes to Terra Cotta Road and installing traffic signals at the intersection.

Crystal Lake will be footing 10 percent of the bill as most of the costs will be borne by the federal government through the Surface Transportation Program. The McHenry County Council of Mayors allocated the funding for the project.

According to Geegan, the Council of Mayors then funds the most crucial projects based on the benefit to the Regional Transportation Network.
