Lula E. Starks, 81, a former Dana Corp. employee, died June 16 at the University of Chicago Hospitals. Mrs. Starks was born in Grenada, Miss., and moved to Chicago in the 1950s. Before retiring in 1980, she was an assembly line worker for 22 years at Dana Corp. in Chicago, a manufacturer of car gaskets. She was a member of the United Auto Workers and an owner and member of the Lake Park Cooperative, which was built by and for the women of the Ladies Garment Union. Mrs. Starks also was a wonderful cook who specialized in sweet potato pie, according to her son, Robert, a professor at Northeastern Illinois University and chair of the Task Force for Black Political Empowerment. Other survivors include four sisters; Rebecca Gillis, Dorothy Harris, Ruth Watt and Rosie Sargent; and two grandchildren. Services were held.
